Bern – a captivating capital

We are proud to welcome you to Bern, the capital of Switzerland, and conveniently located at the heart of the country with stunning views of the Swiss Alps.

About Bern

The city of Bern is the fourth largest city in Switzerland after Zurich, Geneva and Basel, and the capital of Switzerland. The city counts 142'493 residents and the around 420'000 people live in the larger area.

Bern’s historic town centre dates back to 1191. Thanks to its well-preserved architecture, the Old Town of Bern entered the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list in 1983. The Old Town with its six kilometres of arcades offers shelter or shade to visitors strolling through the city. Important landmarks include the Clock Tower (Zytglogge), the Prison Tower (Käfigturm), sculptural fountains from the Renaissance, the Cathedral (Münster), and the well-maintained sandstone facades. Visitors can discover bars, cultural venues, and specialty shops in countless converted cellars.

The Old Town of Bern is encircled by the Aare river. But for Bern’s inhabitants this river is not just a stretch of water; it is also a place for summer recreational activities, like swimming and boating on the Aare. And since Bern was built on a peninsula, everything is close together and easy to reach by foot, tram, or bus.

However, with your reservation confirmation you can also use the public transport (tram and bus) for free. This applies to the entire time of your stay in Bern!

Travel around Bern

If you want to explore Switzerland before or after the Annual Meeting, there are several interesting opportunities from Bern:

Bern and surroundings

Visit Interlaken set in a beautiful and impressive mountain landscape with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains and the world-famous Jungfraujoch. The attractive cities of Zurich, Geneva or Basel are ideal for a city break. All these destinations are no more than 1-2 hours by train. You can also take a Grand Tour of Switzerland.

For those in a hurry

You can take part in one of the many creative city tours in Bern or visit the Federal Palace. After the Annual Meeting, the Bern «Fasnacht» takes place - a typical Swiss traditional carnival. Other options include the famous cheese dairy in the Emmental and internationally renowned museums such as the Kunstmuseum and the Zentrum Paul Klee. You don’t need to book these in advance, which allows you to even do these if you decide spontaneously.

For travel lovers

You may consider taking an international train to some of the most interesting cities in the neighbouring countries of Switzerland. You can go by TGV to Paris, France (4 hours), or take the train to Milan, Italy (3.5 hours), Munich (5-6 hours) or Berlin (8.5 hours).

Let's Move from Words to Action

Climate change is a fact. In Alpine regions, melting glaciers are silent witnesses to the constant rise in temperatures on earth. In Switzerland and neighbouring countries more and more people call for action against climate change. Cities are declaring a climate emergency. Laws to reduce CO2 emissions are being worked on.

Within the economy, the financial sector plays a pivotal role in the transition towards a climate-neutral society. Many banks are in agreement and are committed to reducing the carbon emissions caused by their operations.

On 26 February 2020, Alternative Bank Schweiz hosted a summit in association with WWF Schweiz to explore how to put finance at the service of people and planet.

More than 300 people attended the event. Among them were representatives of Swiss banks, NGOs, regulators, politics and academia, as well as representatives from Climatestrike Switzerland and values-based banks from all over the world.

Part 1: Future Lab

Imagining a climate-neutral financial centre and creating viable ways to get there. Change is possible!
The first part of the summit provided a platform for discussions bringing together different actors in order to develop an agenda based on a shared vision. The vision was jointly developed beforehand by ABS, WWF and representatives of the Swiss Climate Youth Movement.

«If nature loses, the financial industry will too.»

Vision of the future:
It is 2030 and the Swiss financial centre is climate neutral

Before the summit, representatives of Alternative Bank Schweiz, WWF Schweiz and Climatestrike Switzerland developed a vision of the future for the Swiss financial centre. It depicts how four key actors of the financial system and those shaping it will act in 2030 if the Swiss financial centre were fully climate-neutral by this date.

Change is possible:
«The financial system won’t change if we leave it to the professionals.»

How to reach the goal of a climate-neutral financial centre:
Group discussions (fishbowl conversations)

Summit participants were invited to establish dialogue and discuss the vision developed by Alternative Bank Schweiz, WWF Schweiz and representatives of Climatestrike Switzerland. Discussions were held in four different groups, one per key actor treated in the vision:

  • Financial institutions and their shareholders
  • Private and institutional customers
  • Policymakers and regulators
  • Education and academia

The goal was to jointly determine which steps each actor needs to take to make the vision a reality.

Part 2: Evening Conference

Finance must and can care for the climate. What is the best way?
In the second part of the summit, key representatives and decision-makers from the Swiss financial centre presented their positions, reflecting on the ideas presented and developed in the first part of the event.

Financing Change, Changing Finance:
«Roll up your sleeves, and do it now.»

Every Degree Matters – Mobilising Finance for People and Planet

Dear Guests,

We are delighted to invite you to the Global Alliance for Banking on Values Annual Meeting 2020 and address together Every Degree Matters – Mobilising Finance for People and Planet.

Climate change is a fact. In the Alpine region, melting glaciers are silent witnesses of the constant rise in temperatures on earth. These changes in nature do not only affect the environment but also lead to domino effects on all levels of society including economic uncertainty and increased vulnerability of already marginalised groups.

As a network of values-based banks, we are aware of the pivotal role and responsibility of the finance sector in the process of moving towards a climate-friendly society. This Annual Meeting will offer the opportunity to share ideas and learn from each other how to be part of the solution.

Hosted by the GABV founding member Alternative Bank Switzerland, we will gather in Bern, Switzerland – a picturesque city with views of the Alps and a political centre where commitment to social banking can inspire big changes.

Join us in mobilising finance for people and planet.

Kind regards,
